Law 25 – How will it impact a website’s usage statistics?

You’ve adapted your website to the new Law 25, great job! But what will become of the site,s usage statistics now that users can choose to opt out?

Don’t be afraid, this doesn’t mean your website’s visit will be getting less visits! But it does imply that current methods used to measure visits (Google Analytics) will no longer capture the real number of visitors since it will no longer include users refusing to use tracking cookies, which in turn make possible data collection.

A percentage of your users will choose to not allow cookies to capture their data. When a user does so, each time he visits your website, he will be asked again to allow cookies and tracking on your site. Many users will then accept these cookies simply to hide this message, otherwise it will be visible to them on every page of your site. Comparing this to Apple, who have adopted a similar process with updates to iOS 14.5, 45% of users now accept to share their usage data*. Obviously, this percentage of users accepting to be tracked is in constant flux.

To maximize the number of users accepting your tracking cookies, you can configure different formats for your consent window. This window may be shown in a more prominent position, forcing users to take action if they want to navigate on your website. Otherwise, a more discrete banner can float at the bottom of the screen, not blocking your site’s content from being viewed.

The important thing to keep in mind is that your Google Analytics statistics should show a drop in visits as a consequence to this change. As certain users will choose to refuse tracking cookies, their data will no longer be part of your Google Analytics statistics. You will then need to make due with this new reality and review your site’s statistics through a different lens.

The good news is your website’s hosting server also collects anonymous usage data. Since Google Analytics will no longer show precise usage statistics, the server stats will give you a better idea in regards to the number of visitors in a set time period, or which pages are the most viewed.

If you implement a solution in order to conform your site to Law 25, begin by verifying with your hosting provider if these statistics are available. You then will be able to see precise, anonymous usage statistics once more.
